As well as being boosted by the 1,366 ERA collection documents uploaded in the first half of 2010, the repository now includes a series of articles by members of the Owen Dixon Society founded at Bond University in 1994 in honour of Australia’s ‘most eminent judge’ Sir Owen Dixon (1886-1972). The Society also celebrates his legacy with an annual black-tie dinner.

A journal edited by School of Sustainable Development Professor Michael Regan entitled the Public Infrastructure Bulletin has also joined the online open access world with a bright new- look e-publications site.   Comprising of topical and refereed articles this journal commenced in 2003 and aims to have two issues published each year.  

Personal Researcher Pages (PRPs) are also continually growing with a total of 243 created by the end of 2010.  A webpage is set up for each academic as a showcase of their research and scholarship and can also feature an area for presenting Expertise, Honours and Awards and a Links list to other relevant sites.  PRPs are also accessible via the Faculty or Institute pages if you are browsing by discipline.

All Bond researchers and authors are welcome to have a presence in e-publications@bond with their own Personal Researcher Page whilst adding work to their School series which is kept in perpetuity as a record of the scholarship of the University.  Please contact the Repository Coordinator for further information and assistance in depositing material.

HERDC

The Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC) is based on research publications that were published in the previous year.  The collection of these publications commences in the faculties and culminates in all University outputs being delivered in hardcopy to IS Research Support with a completion date of 30 June for all reporting to DIISR.  

In April this year IS welcomed Dianne Monnier to the team and she took on the job of HERDC verification and data entry with enthusiasm as the record number of submissions arrived on her desk.  Dianne’s work does not stop with building up impressive piles of research papers, but continues as she enters the bibliographic details into e-publications@bond giving Bond University research output data an even greater reach into the global community. 

ERA

Information Services has provided support for Bond’s submission to the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) Initiative.  ERA is an evaluative program of the Australian Government via the Australian Research Council.  It aims to assess research quality within Australia’s higher education institutions using a combination of indicators and expert review. 

The Information Services Research Support team worked very closely with Faculty Research Coordinators, the Office of Research Services (ORS) and the Project Management Office (PMO) to collate and process the publication data gathered for this exercise over many weeks.  

In particular the month of May was very demanding with the data being received from the faculties, processed and reformatted and sent onto PMO for upload into the University’s new data management system Research Master.   As well as becoming a RefWorks guru during this exercise Kendall Kousek expertly took on the complex task of checking, sorting and cleansing the data as it arrived at IS and achieved the high quality of data required for the next stage.

Of course uploading the data to the repository is a mandatory step in the ERA exercise and the multiple batch loading was efficiently completed by Lisa Barker whose technical skills are much appreciated.  This proficient teamwork enabled IS to deliver a high standard of data to PMO and ORS on schedule.  

 ‘Thank you’ to everyone in the Research Support team for a job well done on both collection exercises over the last few months.

Downloads x 1,000,000!

The University has passed a very important milestone: the world has downloaded more than 1 million full-text downloads of Bond research ‘outputs’ (versions of articles and papers permitted for open access) in the e-publications@ bond repository.  The repository was launched by the VC on 21 November 2006. So this means on average downloads of ~ 780 Bond research outputs / day.  It is extraordinary to realise how much the world is downloading our research, and prompts us to speculate on who they are and why they are so interested.

Congratulations to our researchers for generating research that elicits such attention, and to Information Services for enabling the service so effectively.

What a good day for e-publications@ bond to reach the milestone of 2,000 items.

As you may know the Bond University digital repository contains a spectrum of academic papers from all faculties, scholarly journals, theses and a growing collection of historical photographs in the Bond Gallery and is building into a collection that is an excellent representation of many Bond researchers’ endeavours and achievements.

The two most recent items to be uploaded to the repository reflect the diversity of material available. An in-depth study of Bond’s acclaimed new technology-rich and architecturally exciting learning environment The Balnaves Foundation Multimedia Learning Centre is of interest to all who work and attend Bond, and don’t forget to view the PowerPoint presentation which is offered alongside the paper.

The 2,000th item is an article from the newest in the line-up of scholarly journals produced at Bond: The ADR Bulletin. The upload of articles is in the early stages for this journal, but it promises to be a valuable addition to the repository and is already amassing good download statistics.

So, what is Open Access and what has it to do with the University’s digital repository?

Simply put, Open Access (OA) is a movement to make available online research and scholarly material for the greater benefit of all, without cost, to enhance learning and scholarly communication.

All OA material is made available with the consent of the publisher and copyright is retained. The main reason authors make their articles openly accessible is to maximize their research impact and this is achieved by placing material in institutional repositories which, like Bond’s, are indexed by Google and other major search engines.

It is in the spirit of OA that e-publications@ bond exists, to enable faculty staff and researchers to contribute digital materials for long-term preservation and world-wide electronic accessibility.

Bond Law Review is a refereed journal which invites contributions from Bond staff, legal practitioners and scholars from all over the world. It is truly a part of Bond history with its inaugural volume published in 1989 and it continues to be published twice each year by the Bond Faculty of Law Review Editorial Committee. Bond Law Review not only contains learned articles but also commentaries, book reviews and obituraries and stands as a flagship of Bond University publishing.

The Culture Mandala is a humanities journal with a rich offering of articles ranging from political observations to discussion of religious and cultural topics which impact on east-west relations. Published by the Centre for East-West Cultural and Economic Studies, the Culture Mandala touches on topics as diverse as the space program in China to dental care in Balinese schools. Each issue is a journey into the religions and cultures of Australia’s near neighbours.

Just like spam adds to the gross volume of email, there are automated processes artificially inflating the numbers of hits on Bond’s repository papers.    A recent analysis of thousands of log files has confirmed that the integrity of our download statistics is compromised by the activity of sophisticated robots, crawlers and spam-bots (RACS) trawling the internet. 

This discovery has motivated bepress, the provider of Digital Commons, to completely re-write their filtering technology to remove machine downloads and other anomalies.  Digital Commons now meets and significantly exceeds COUNTER, an industry standard for online usage statistics.  For more information see  http://www.bepress.com/download_counts.html. 

Download counts and usage statistics continue to grow in importance as more scholarship is placed online, and Bond University researchers can take comfort that this latest upgrade will assist them in assessing the impact of their publications with far more accuracy than in the past.   

If your papers are in e-publications@ bond you will soon receive an email from Digital Commons announcing their new filtering system has been implemented.  The ensuing result will be future monthly full-text download reports that are more accurate and therefore a more reliable source by which you can monitor reader interest in your research.

Bond’s digital repository has achieved this milestone within a year of its formal launch last November. Steady growth has been accomplished with contributions of articles from every faculty, together with the recent appearance of some notable Bond University journals such as Spreadsheets in Education and Bond University Student Law Review who have made e-publications@ Bond their official home. 

The 1,000th paper in fact belongs to our latest addition to the journal fold, Bond Law Review.  This journal commenced in 1989 and it continues to be an influential publication today.  The upload of all available volumes is expected to be completed in the very near future.

In conjunction with recording the HERDC submissions, personal researcher pages were created for the authors. These pages show selected works for authors. Where possible we are also providing a complete list of publications even if all of the papers are not archived individually in the repository. Over time, the personal researcher pages will be developed to provide as complete a list of publications as possible without requiring a PDF version of the author’s list of writings.

Spreadsheets in education (eJSIE) is now fully hosted in epublications@ Bond. Congratulations to Steve Sugden for being the first editor to try out the journal management functionality within the respository. eJSIE allows authors to submit their articles online and provides an interface for the administration of the peer-review process. eJSIE joins four law journals in the repository.

Since then, David Robinson has acquired a substantial presence in the repository with a personal researcher page featuring journal articles and conference papers. 

At the meeting there was some discussion about possible changes to the scholarly publishing landscape, brought about by the open access movement. Repositories are one of the contributors to increased availability of research to the masses via the Internet without a pay to view cost.

For those interested in reading more about scholarly publishing and open access, Kennan and Kautz’s paper may be of useful. The paper has been accepted for the ECIS 2007 conference in June, but is already openly accessible on DLIST (Digital Library of Information Science and Technology). So you can read about open access and experience it at the same time.

The author’s include a diagram showing possibilities for scholarly publishing enabled by developments in information technology. This model is quite different to the models described for traditional print-based publishing and its derivative model for electronic journal publishing.

They conclude that changes in scholarly publishing are being motivated by new technical opportunities and that they are emerging without a full understanding of the implications for communication and publishing in the scholarly world.

There is no doubt that archiving research papers in an open access repository plays a significant role in the distribution and reach of your work. Theses are commonly in the most frequently downloaded list of Bond’s repository, but there a number of other papers with significant download numbers featured in the faculty series. Psychology papers appear to be popular and even older issues of the Dispute Resolution Centre Newsletter are being downloaded in quite high numbers. Volume 15 (2003) - 51 downloads in February.

This week the very first electronic issue of the journal was published in ePublications@ Bond. Congratulations to Lauren Hertel and her team on this milestone.

In the UK, the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) partnering with publishers has announced an arrangement where RAE panel members will have free electronic access to articles submitted to the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. The access will be enabled using software from CrossRef and Eduserv.

The RQF will require Australian Universities to submit an electronic portfolio for research groups, which will include 4 pieces of research output for each researcher. Assessors will need to access those outputs, and many will be pleased that their research is being assessed on a level-playing field using publisher versions rather than a plain author’s version. While author versions available in repositories may be peer-reviewed, there are concerns that assessors may sub-consciously give them less credit than those presented in the publisher’s layout.

The RAE licence sounds like a winner.

Scientific Commons provides a simple search interface and a clean display of records with links to the originating repository. It also provides citation downloads in EndNote and Bibtex formats. There are currently 841 repositories from 48 countries. It seems that there will be some development of interesting personalization services, including customised RSS feeds and researcher profiles that will enable the researcher to group together articles deposited in different institutional repositories.

In both August and September, Attachment, Fear of Intimacy and Differentiation of Self among Clients in Substance Disorder Treatment Facilities by Thorberg and Lyvers, continued to rank as the most downloaded paper in the repository.

In October though, it was overtaken by Corporate Governance, Earnings Management, and the Information Content of Accounting Earnings: Theoretical Model and Empirical Tests a thesis by past student Turki Bugshan.

 The repository now contains over 250 papers and full-text downloads for the last 7 days has exceeded 900. 

The repository provides open access to theses, pre-prints and post-prints of journal articles, conference papers and book chapters, and is indexed by Google, Yahoo and many other search engines.

The first paper was uploaded in March 2006 and now there are over 250 papers and full text downloads in excess of 800 per week. The repository is promoting Bond research around the World.

Librarians Yvonne Auld and Antoinette Cass have been busy uploading research papers to the repository, while Christine Potter has built the thesis collection.

New directions for the repository will see the establishment of a number of open access journals. Planning is currently in place to move several of the Law journals and Spreadsheets in Education to the repository.

Run by the University of Nottingham, oPenDOAR is funded by The Open Societies Institute (OSI),  the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), the Consortium of Research Libraries (CURL) and SPARCEurope and is working with service providers and search engines to improve the use of open access material.

In addition to a simple listing, a search facility is available to find repositories based on language, disciplines, content types and geographic regions. 

Hajjem et al. (2005) report that this applies accross quite different disciplines, not just hard sciences. Across biology, business, psychology and sociology, they report that citation counts are consistently higher for OA articles. This increase is between 25% and 250% higher than for articles with restricted access.

Antelman’s (2004) comparison of citation counts for articles in the disciplines of philosophy, political science, electrical and electronic engineering and mathematics showed a relative increase in citations for open access articles ranging from 45% in philosophy to 91% in mathematics.

Because open access articles are not restricted to subscribers, or licensed users, or those able to pay-per-view, the potential readership of articles reproduced in open access repositories is potentially far greater. For authors, large readership is a desirable commodity, and if that leads to increased citation counts, then archiving research papers in an institutional repository like e-publications@ bond is a worthwhile endeavour.

However, the exciting thing about the repository is its success in making research papers accessible. This in turn should lead to an increase in citations. This graph shows the dramatic increase in the number of full-text downloads – an indicator of increased accessibility to the content of e-publications@bond.

On the home page of the repository you can see a counter of how many time users have clicked that download link in the last 7 days. At the time of writing, the counter was at 179.

If the publisher/journal is in the database its default policy will be displayed with links through to the full policy on the publisher’s site if it is available.

Sherpa uses a colour scheme to categorise publisher policies. If you are looking for a publisher you might like to consult Sherpa/Romeo to consider archiving policies before you submit your next paper. Look for green or blue in preference to yellow or white if you want to archive a copy in the repository.

The terms pre-print and post-print are also defined on the site so you can determine what version of your paper should be submitted to the repository.

The ARROW Discovery Service contains metadata for a number of Australian research repositories linking users directly to the home repositories and in most cases full text of the eprints. This resource is growing and is a useful tool for discovery of and access to Australian research.

Our goal is to promote innovation in science by lowering the legal and technical costs of the sharing and reuse of scientific work. We remove unnecessary obstacles to scientific collaboration by creating voluntary legal regimes for research and development.

The Scholar's Copyright Project is one of the ways that ScienceCommons is working towards their goal. It has developed some resources to assist all scholars (not just the science community) to retain rights for archiving works on the public internet. The "Author Addenda" are three options to append to the standard copyright transfer agreements provided by publishers.

Are you negotiating with a publisher now? You might find these amendments useful. The site also provides answers to frequently asked questions about the project including advice on how to use these addenda.

The submission is addressed to making a change in the reporting requirements for all funded schemes, which will make it a requirement of receiving the grant to deposit an electronic copy of any refereed research journal or conference articles deriving from the grant with the institution administering the grant. Minor changes are needed in the Funding Rules and the Funding Agreements. Precise wording is supplied to eliminate any concerns by publishers and to make the implementation easy.

The benefits to Australia are that Australia’s ARC publicly funded research is made visible to all through the Internet, and in the majority of cases publicly accessible. This will raise Australia’s research impact and is consistent with Australia’s espousal of a level playing field in the dissemination of research, and with activities currently underway or implemented in the USA, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the European Union.

4. I want the University to be the bad guy and insist that everything I publish go into the Institutional Repository. That way I can blame the university when I have to argue with the journals and publishers.
5. I want the University to make a contract I can send the publishers to simplify this process for me.

2. At present epublications@bond.edu.au only has an RSS feed for newly added content. I have asked our system vendor if it is possible for us to establish other rss feeds. For example, feeds for each individual author, or feeds based on a search query. Content could then be easily syndicated and displayed on other web pages or personal blogs, or subscribed to using a news aggregator for users to keep up-to-date with research being published in their field.
3. The keyword clicking may not yet be on the horizon, but it is possible to search across multiple repositories. OAIster enables searching across 7,498,800 records from 639 institutions. e-publications@bond is included. We have also made contact with the ARROW Discovery Service to have our data harvested for inclusion in that service. ARROW stands for Australian Research Repositories Online to the World. We are also working with the ADT program to have Bond's theses metadata harvested for inclusion in the Australian Digital Theses program.
   
4. As previously posted, QUT has a policy requiring authors at that institution to deposit research papers in their repository within the constraints and limitations of copyright law. Its performance in coverage of HERDC compliant publications is far and away better than other universities surveyed.

5. Authors may try to modify copyright transfer in future contracts by including a clause such as:
   

   I retain the right to distribute my paper for free for scholarly/scientific purposes, in particular, the right to self-archive it publicly online in a Web-based institutional repository such as e-publications@bond (http://epublications.bond.edu.au)

6. This relates back to the automated re-use of metadata by different systems to allow discovery through multiple services while the management of the files and metadata entry is only carried out in one place. See points 3 and 2 and 1 above.

Next week testing will commence for harvesting metadata for the Australian Digital Thesis Program.

Back in January 2005 I was on leave in Tasmania and visited my previous Head of Department at the University of Tasmania, Prof Arthur Sale. He is an avid supporter of institutional repositories for research output (see his article in FirstMonday, De-unifying a digital library). He quickly convinced me of the benefits of research staff self-archiving their publications in a local respository and urged me to install the free E-prints repository software from my old alma mater, the University of Southampton, department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

On return to Bond I was only able to acquire capacity on a Faculty of Information Technology server to install E-prints for my faculty colleagues. With a few days assistance from Travis Johnston from the faculty tech support group we were able to install version 2.3 of E-prints on the latest Apache and MySQL distributions, quite a feat apparently. We were able to put up a few publications to prove that the system could be used easily by staff.

Of course our Bond library staff were very interested in our E-prints experiences and quickly invited me to be part of a working party to look at a university-wide solution. We had some very helpful advice from Belinda Weaver who leads the University of Queensland e-repository implementation. In the end Bond quite rightly decided to adopt a hosting solution using the Digital Commons service which allows an institutional repository to be built quickly without the need to buy and install servers and software and create a technical support team.

The benefits of institutional digital repositories are well know but are worth repeating. Research output is available globally to one research peers via all the usual online search avenues including Google and its ilk. Since preprints can be placed in the repository the research results can be made available immediately without the usual delays involved with conference and journal publishing. More than 80% of publishers than will require copyright be transferred to them still agree to this self-archiving online publication in repositories. Another great benefit is the ease with which research output can be made available to students via simple hyperlinks. Even older research publications not in electronic form can be scanned easily and placed in the repository. Probably best of all is the real-time production of access data that allows research authors a measure of how their work is being cited and used by others around the world.

In just a few weeks Peta Hopkins has been able to create and customise the Digital Commons site for our e-publications at Bond repository. I am looking forward to putting up all my publications in electronic form in the next few weeks. This service will be a great leap forward for Bond’s researchers and will give us a strong presence amongst the research universities of the world.

Recent trends show that some publishers are becoming more amenable to authors self-archiving their research in institutional repositories.

The Sherpa/Romeo list makes it easy for researchers to check on the copyright policies of journal publishers. Users can look up a journal title or publisher to check on the default copyright policy. The list provides a summary as well as a link to the full policy. Changes or exceptions to the default policy can be negotiated by authors.

The Sherpa/Romeo list is worth considering when looking for potential publishers of your research, however, as policies in this area are rapidly evolving the contract you sign contains the final word on whether you can archive a post-print.

The author owns the copyright on pre-refereed pre-prints so no permission has to be sought to archive a pre-print.

Institutional repositories are about open access and discoverability. They are not meant to replace the quality control aspects of refereeing and publication. But if you are concerned about demonstrating the quality of your research a supplementary file outlining variations with the final work can be uploaded to the repository, or the publisher may simply ask for a link to the final refereed version. Both of these options can be accommodated in e-publications@bond.

• Research and scholarly literature produced at Bond
• Theses completed by Bond students
• University archival material such as historical photographs
• Journals and other materials published by the University

Bond staff and post-graduate students produce research and scholarly papers as a contribution to their discipline and/or as part of scholarly communication. Much of this is intended for publication for the general purpose of recognition and impact and not for commercialisation, individual royalty payment or revenue for the author or the University. This body of research and scholarly output is Bond’s contribution to the outside world and through the establishment of an online repository this can be stored and made accessible from all over the world.

The first stages of the implementation project will focus on research papers and on electronic theses. The repository will enable us to participate fully in the Australian Digital Thesis Program.
